Remote talk

The dance of the Milky Way and the LMC

Denis Erkal (University of Surrey, UK)

Tuesday 14/04/2020 @ 14:00, Google Hangouts Meet

Recent studies suggest the LMC is as massive as 25% the mass of the Milky Way. I will describe the diverse lines of reasoning that lead us to this result and then focus on the implications. In particular, an LMC this massive will result in a significant reflex motion of the Milky Way. I will show how this affects our ability to infer the mass and shape of our own Galaxy and how we must account for the LMC when doing this.
