X-Ray Surveys of AGNs with the AXIS Probe

In this talk, I will present the results of the simulations of a set of surveys performed with the AXIS probe, an X-ray mission concept proposed to the NASA 2020 Decadal Survey. With a sub-arcsecond resolution over a field of view of ~24'x24', combined with an effective area ~5-10 times larger than those of currently available X-ray facilities, AXIS will provide an unprecedented view of the 0.3-10 keV sky. In a planned total observing time of 15 Ms, AXIS will detect ~225,000 AGNs and ~50,000 non-active galaxies; 90% of these objects will be detected for the first time in the X-rays With the detection of up to ~10,000 AGNs at redshift z>3, AXIS surveys will open a new window of knowledge on the evolution of AGNs over cosmic time, allowing us to study with unprecedented statistic the evolution with redshift of the fraction of obscured AGNs (up to z~6), and their relation with their host galaxy and star formation properties. Thanks to its technical layout, AXIS will work in excellent synergy with the forthcoming Athena mission.
