Searching gas in galaxies and finding...sound in data

Anita Zanella (INAF-OAS)

Thursday 27/02/2025 @ 11:30, Sala Antonio Sollima (IV piano Battiferro)

State-of-the-art facilities such as ALMA and JWST have revolutionized our understanding of the interstellar medium (ISM) in both star-forming and quiescent galaxies at high redshift. In recent years, it has become possible to investigate the physical conditions, morphology, and kinematics of the ISM from cosmic noon to cosmic dawn in a spatially resolved manner, achieving a level of detail comparable to that of the local Universe. Additionally, we can now detect and study the ISM properties of quiescent galaxies at cosmic noon, shedding light on the mechanisms behind their cessation of star formation. I will present recent observational results on these topics, highlighting open questions and ongoing challenges in the field. Furthermore, I will take this opportunity to share my work (and excitement) about the potential of using sound to represent astronomical data for research, outreach, and education.
