Recent findings, mainly inspired by direct cosmic ray measurements and gamma ray observations of Galactic sources, have led to a wealth of fresh ideas on the origin of Galactic cosmic rays and on the role of supernova remnants as the reference sources of this cosmic radiation. I will review these findings and outline some possible directions for future research. I will mostly focus on viable mechanisms of particle acceleration up to PeV energies and the ways to test the underlying Physics with present and future gamma ray observations.
