Real-time analysis detection methods for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Ambra Di Piano (INAF OAS)

Tuesday 23/02/2021 @ 14:00, Sala IV piano Battiferro

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the next generation ground-based observatory for very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, with the deployment of tens of highly sensitive and fast-reacting Cherenkov telescopes. It will cover a wide energy range (20 GeV - 300 TeV) with unprecedented sensitivity. The facility will be provided with a Science Alert Generation (SAG) system which, among other tasks, evaluates the significance of candidate alerts and performs the first high-level data analysis of on-going observations. Science alerts must be issued by the SAG within 20 seconds of latency from data acquisition and the analysis must have sensitivity not worse than half of the nominal one. The focus of this seminar is the blind-search and detection of transient phenomena at very-short exposure times (up to 100 seconds) in the context of the SAG reaction to an external alert, such as from a gamma-ray burst or a gravitational wave event.
