Neutrino production in AGN jets?

In September 2017, IceCube detected the very-high-energy neutrino event IceCube-170922 in spatial coincidence with the flaring blazar TXS 0506+056. Subsequently, in a systematic analysis of archival data, a significant excess of 13 +/- 5 neutrinos from the same direction were identified in data from a ~ 6 month period in 2014 - 2015. This triggered a flurry of theoretical attempts to model the broadband spectral energy distribution and neutrino emission from this source with a variety of hadronic and lepto-hadronic models. This talk summarizes these modeling attempts and provides a critical review of constraints on photo-hadronic neutrino emission from blazars. In particular, constraints from the inevitable electromagnetic cascades initiated by photo-hadronic pion production will be presented.
