The third scientific run (O3) of LIGO and Virgo: discovered gravitational wave sources, follow-up activities and preliminary results

The first gravitational wave (GW) signal from a binary black hole merger event, GW150914, was discovered during the first scientific run (O1, Sept 2015-Jan 2016) of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo interferometers and it signed the history of physics and astronomy. During the second run (O2, Jan-Aug 2017), the detection of the first binary neutron star merger, GW170817, associated with the short GRB 170817 and the first robust evidence of a kilonova emission, were a second major breakthrough that marked the beginning of multi-messenger astrophysics with GWs. In this talk, we will review the activities for the detection of the GW sources during the third scientific run (O3) and for the search of the electromagnetic counterparts, the first results, and the future perspectives.
