Diffuse radio emission from Galaxy Clusters in the radio band, in the form of radio halos and relics, is the main proof of the presence of magnetic fields and relativistic particles in the Intra Cluster Medium. The origin of these non-thermal components, their impact on the galaxy cluster microphysics and dynamics is still matter of discussion. There is, however, a large consensus on the idea that these radio emissions are generated in connection with the merging events that lead to the formation of galaxy clusters themselves, due to the acceleration of relativistic particles by turbulence and shocks that are triggered in the Intra Cluster Medium. Main expectations of this scenario can be tested and investigated at low radio frequency. The advent of the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) is enabling such a possibility unveiling complex details of diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters. In this talk I will introduce the theoretical framework, resume recent LOFAR highlights in the field and show prospects for future LOFAR surveys.
