New challenges in computational cosmology: hybrid architectures and AI algorithms

Claudio Gheller (ETHZ-Centro Svizzero di Calolo Scientifico)

Tuesday 11/12/2018 @ 14:00, Sala IV piano Battiferro

In this talk we will focus on the study of the cosmic web through numerical simulations addressing two outstanding related topics. Firstly, we will discuss how numerical simulations can exploit innovative supercompuing architectures, in particular hybrid accelerated systems, to produce increasingly larger and more sophisticated models and how codes have to evolve in order to adapt to such architectures. In the second part of the talk we will introduce how the same HPC solutions can be used to run data processing tools, tuned using simulation results, and finalized to give new instrument to astronomers for a fast and accurate analysis of large datasets. In particular we will present the adoption of a Deep Learning based methodology (called COSMODEEP) for automated identification of faint, extended sources in radio images.
