Despite continuous efforts and progress over the last 50 years, our current understanding of fluid and plasma dynamo effects, the physical processes by which magnetic fields are thought to be amplified to dynamical levels in many in astrophysical systems, remains extremely limited observationally, experimentally, mathematically and numerically. In this talk I will present an overview of the current state of different branches of astrophysical dynamo research, highlighting a few current major roadblocks and limitations that make it difficult to understand the truly asymptotic nonlinear states of astrophysical dynamos, and will be present several recent numerical developments aiming at probing such regimes.
