Astrophysics Talk

Are the first quasars special?

Emanuele Paolo Farina (Gemini observatory)

Tuesday 27/09/2022 @ 14:00, NOTE LOCATION!!! : Sala meeting II piano Battiferro + remote

The last decades have seen a surge in the number of z>6 quasars known. The advent of new observational facilities and instruments, such as, among others, X-Shooter, ALMA, and MUSE is providing an unprecedented glimpse on the formation of the first massive galaxies and black holes at the so-called cosmic dawn. In this talk, I will present an (incomplete) summary of our current knowledge of early quasars properties, moving from the central black holes out to their circum-galactic medium and to their large scale environment, and I will compare them with those of bright z~2-3 quasars. I will highlight the main similarities and differences and discuss how (and where) our knowledge of quasars can be carried over cosmic times.
