In the era of large spectroscopic surveys, high-quality spectra can contribute to our understanding of the Galactic chemical evolution, not only providing high-precision abundances of elements belonging to the different nucleosynthesis channels, but also giving constraints to one of the most elusive quantity in astrophysics, i.e. stellar age. Some abundance ratios, called chemical clocks, have proved to be excellent indicators of the stellar age. They constitute an alternative method for estimating the age of field stars. In this talk, I aim at describing this method to calibrate empirical relations between abundance ratios, metallicity and stellar ages, using open clusters and stars with asteroseismic data as calibrators.
