The EAGLE cosmological simulations have been very successful at improving our understanding of the physics of galaxy formation. However, EAGLE and similar simulations by other groups have two critical shortcomings: (i) the absence of a cold interstellar gas phase, and (ii) too coarse resolution of dark matter, which affects the kinematics and internal structure of galaxies. The COLIBRE project consists of a suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations in which these issues will be resolved. The COLIBRE simulations will improve on the EAGLE simulations by using a new code (SWIFT), including more physics, spanning a wider range of resolutions, and using many more particles.
