The most massive galaxies were the first to shut off their star formation, turning into quiescent systems when the universe was still young. I will present recent progress in the study of this galaxy population from multi-wavelength observations and new spectroscopy obtained by the Blue Jay survey, a medium-size Cycle-1 program with the James Webb Space Telescope.
