Why are novae important - the prequel: panchromatic high resolution spectroscopy of bright novae

A four years long project, recently concluded, has allowed the identification of a unified scenario for the nova ejecta. In this talk I will present the project and the derived scenario. The observational evidence will be comparatively discussed with respect to those of apparently similar astrophysical phenomena and the results framed within the broader context of nova studies.
