The emergence of filaments: the frayed side of the universe

New radio observations reveal that many structures in the Universe are very filamentary in nature. This is seen in the Galactic centre, in the vicinity of radio galaxies as well as in diffuse radio sources in galaxy clusters. I will review these new developments from, both, an observational as well as a theoretical angle.
