Supernovae are among the most energetic events in the Universe, observed as transients in optical and near-infrared wavelengths. The features we can extract from these data allow us to analyze the final stages of stellar evolution in massive stars. However, their observational diversity makes it difficult to fit them into a single theoretical scenario. By analyzing both photometry and spectra, we can gather information about the progenitor, the explosion that led to the supernova event, and the subsequent phases of the compact remnant. These characteristics depend not only on the star's evolution but also on potential interactions with the surrounding environment. In this talk, I will go over how observations of supernovae place constraints on stellar evolution theory and how these constraints are linked to the diversity within the so-called supernova zoo.
