Metal-poor stars provide information about the early epochs of star formation in the universe, the short phase of primordial nucleosynthesis and about the masses of the first stars. I will review the current searches for the most metal-poor stars in the universe, with particular emphasis on the results of the TOPOS ("Turn-Off Primordial Stars") large program which we started a few years ago at the ESO/VLT.
